Support Services
The Novato Unified School District has 795 certificated teachers and classified personnel. Schools share the services of speech therapists, library media specialists, psychologists and nurses. Counselors are on staff at each secondary school. All schools offer assistance to non-English speaking students. Classes for gifted and talented students are offered in grades 4-8 and the high schools offer honors and advanced placement classes. Every elementary school has privately operated on-site childcare. School bus transportation is available for a fee.

Student Achievement
Progress reports are sent home at the trimester to students in grades 1-5; students in grades 6-12 receive quarterly letter grade report cards. Parent-teacher conferences are held in the fall at all elementary schools and are available upon request in grades 6-12. Approximately 85% of the high school graduates attend colleges and universities. Student “benchmarks” based on state standards are established for each grade and subject. Student assessments include the California Achievement Test 6 (CAT/6), Golden State exams, CELDT, CAHSEE, Physical Fitness Test, Scholastic Aptitude Test, report cards, portfolios of student work, classroom tests, teacher observations and performance tasks. STAR results are available online at http://www.nusd.org and at the California Department of Education's website: http://star.cde.ca.gov

Community Involvement
PTA activities, booster clubs, leadership teams and classroom programs provide opportunities for parent participation in shaping the quality of instruction. Parents, community members and local businesses support the district through a parcel assessment, A+ for Kids and an Emergency Education Fund and newly formed foundation, School Fuel. The district also benefits from collaborative partnerships with several businesses, community agencies and the Novato Community Hospital. In November 2001, the community passed a $107 million facilities improvement bond to enable the district to repair and renovate its facilities. Improvement projects continue to move forward, with most work done during the summer months when students are not in attendance.
