SAUSALITO SCHOOL DISTRICT

The Sausalito Marin City School District (SMCSD) is an elementary (K-8) district drawing its student population from Sausalito and Marin City. The district has three schools: Bayside Elementary, Martin Luther King, Jr. Academy and Willow Creek Academy, a charter school. District enrollment is 317 students. Class size averages 15 students. SMCSD students attend high school in the Tamalpais Union High School District.

Mission Statement
The Sausalito Marin City School District is committed to providing a rigorous and challenging academic program for all children in a safe environment that values diversity. We commit to a climate of mutual respect. All services in the SMCSD focus on furthering student academic achievement and developing responsible citizens.

Academic Program
The Sausalito Marin City School District employs 13 teachers, a part-time clinical psychologist and a certified nurse. State special education, counseling and Title 1 services are provided for students with special needs. A GATE program for gifted and talented students is offered. Through partnerships with Vector Theatre, The Bay Model Association and The Headlands Institute, the district schools are provided with enrichment programs in the visual and performing arts and physical sciences. Community Involvement
Parents, community, business and service organizations support the academic and social development of our students. Parents participate in parent-sponsored activities and assist in the classrooms. The Sausalito Schools Foundation funds hands-on science, multicultural music/drama programs, mini grants and teacher/class projects. The district also benefits from partnerships with businesses to fund computer-based educational projects and from grants that provide a resource pool of services for families. The district was pleased that Board President Dr. Shirley Thornton was named Marin County Trustee of the Year in 2003 at the Golden Bell Awards night.
